New York Giants Rumors: Could Jon Beason be heading for retirement with another knee surgery on the horizon?

The New York Giants 2015 season was filled with more disappointment and negatives than positives. One of the negatives was the health of Jon Beason. Beason once again battled a ton of injuries, and his absence from the field was one of the reasons for the Giants’ struggles defensively.

Beason cannot be solely blamed for what turned out to be a disaster for the Giants on defense in 2015, but his absence sure didn’t make things any easier. Beason was expected to man the middle of the Giants defense, but was able to appear in only five games all season, making four starts. Most of the games he didn’t even make it through unscatched, and was on snap counts more often than not as he played only 162 snaps.

Beason finished the season with 18 tackles and no other recorded stats. His best game came against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 7 when he finished the game with 11 tackles. It was not a coincidence that the Giants went 4-1 in the five games Beason appeared in, as he was a big part of what they were planning defensively. Without him in the lineup the Giants were forced to go with the inexperienced Uani Unga, who was exposed time and time again.

Beason was put on season-ending IR during Week 9 because of knee and ankle injuries as he was plagued by injuries throughout the summer and into the regular season. Knee injuries have been what has plagued Beason the most throughout his career though, and it seems that he will need another one this offseason.

Beason, who will turn 31 years old in four days, needs surgery on his knee this offseason once again. Beason plans to try and return, but there is some contemplation of retiring if his body does not respond to rehab according to Alex Marvez of FoxSports.com.

Beason’s body is simply breaking down on him, as he has missed 67 out of a possible 96 games since the 2011 season began. Beason played in every game the first four seasons of his career with the Carolina Panthers, but has seen his health deteriorate since then.

There was already a strong chance that the Giants would be moving on from Beason this offseason, as he is due to be a $6.5 million cap hit in 2016. That is not a number the Giants would be willing to pay even if Beason wasn’t set to undergo another surgery this offseason.

At this point in time, retirement seems the most likely route for Beason as it is hard to imagine him having a robust market at this stage of his career with the injury history he brings along with him.
