New York Mets: Noah Syndergaard Wants Yoenis Cespedes Back

The New York Mets are coming off their best season in a long time, and that will make expectations high for years to come with their talented young rotation.

Despite having a great rotation, the Mets really struggled to score runs last season, as their lineup was a disaster until they pulled off one of the best trades in the history of the franchise. The decision to trade for Yoenis Cespedes instantly gave the Mets the middle of the order hitter that they desperately needed.

Cespedes went on to have one of the best post-trade deadline performances in recent memory, as he was crushing the baseball for the Mets. While the trade for Cespedes obviously worked for the Mets, the marriage wasn’t expected to be longer than the second half of last season.

After the great second half to the season, Cespedes is looking for a long-term contract, likely in the range of five to six years, worth $100-$120 million dollars. That kind of money seemed to be out of the range of the Mets’ front office, but with Cespedes still available, the Mets fans, and one of their young pitchers are still hopeful for his return.

“Of course, we’re hoping,” Syndergaard said Friday to Dan Martin of the New York Post. “We all saw the tear he went on from July through the end of the season. We’d love to have that bat back in the lineup, so as long as he’s out there, we’re hoping for that.”

“I like how the team is coming along so far,” Syndergaard said to Martin. “I think it’s gonna be another fun year for us and the fans. I think we’re pretty solid as it stands right now.”

The Mets did address an area of need this offseason, as they traded Jon Niese to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Neil Walker, and then signed shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. The moves to acquire the two middle infielders does mean that Daniel Murphy’s days are done with the Mets, but Syndergaard is excited to meet his new teammates.

“I’m excited to meet the new guys,” Syndergaard said to Martin. “I’ve heard nothing but great things about Walker. I don’t know much about Cabrera, but he’s a great athlete and ballplayer.”

One of the most notable moves for the Mets was the re-signing of fan favorite Bartolo Colon to a one-year deal. Colon is a popular player in the clubhouse and a veteran player that will be back to help continue the growth of the young staff. Colon will likely be a starter until Zack Wheeler returns from injury and will then slide into a role in the bullpen.

“That’s a huge deal,” Syndergaard said to Martin. “He’s the Godfather out there. He’s an unbelievable leader, even though there’s a little bit of a language barrier. Just watching him pitch and have fun is the best.”

“I’ve had a couple of months to relax, unwind and reflect on the season a little bit,” Syndergaard said. “I’m still a little heartbroken about how the season ended, but it will keep us hungry for next year.”

Coming up just short of a World Series in his rookie season was tough for Syndergaard, but the Mets’ future is very bright with their pitching staff. As great as the pitching was, the Mets’ front office also must make sure they put a lineup on the field that can score some runs as the Mets’ pitchers will quickly become frustrated losing close low-scoring games again.
