New York Giants Waive Damontre Moore After Fight With Cullen Jenkins

The New York Giants made a surprise move by waiving defensive end Damontre Moore Friday night, but his problems in the locker room were beginning to outweigh the little production he was providing on the field.

The New York Giants made a move that will surprise many people on Friday, as they released defensive end Damontre Moore. It is a head scratching move on the surface, as the Giants are desperate for pass rushers and that is thought to be Moore’s greatest strength. Unfortunately for him it was not something that he did enough, and with problems mounting it was only a matter of time until the Giants had enough and they cut ties.

That point came Friday, as the Giants had finally had enough of the underachieving third round pick from 2013. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Moore got into a fight and disagreement with teammate Cullen Jenkins. The reason? Beats by Dre headphones.

Yes, an NFL player threw away $585,000 that he was making from an NFL team over a disagreement over free headphones from teammate a teammate. What is being said is that Odell Beckham Jr. brought blue headphones for his teammates. Jenkins, for whatever reason, claimed two of them, leaving Moore without a pair.

This evidently angered Moore, and a fight ensued. This just goes in line with the same problems the Giants have been seeing from Moore ever since they drafted him out of Texas A&M. He has a ton of potential as a pass rusher, but has never been able to get it together.

His immaturity issues are still a problem, as he could buy almost 2,000 of the most expensive Beats by Dre headphones off what he was earning from the Giants this season.

According to Mike Garafalo, this was just the most recent incident in a long line of outbursts from Moore, and that this one broke the camel’s back as the Giants finally had enough with his antics.

When you combine that sort of behavior with no production on the field, it is only a matter of time until you are let go. Moore has been unable to develop any of the raw talent that he showed he possessed at Texas A&M, registering only 8.5 sacks thus far in his career. This season he had only three, getting passed over by Kerry Wynn on the depth chart despite the Giants languishing near the bottom of the NFL in sacks all season. Moore also has more personal foul penalties than sacks this season, which is not what you want to see.

It has been a big fall for Moore, as GM Jerry Reese does not like to give up on draft picks easily. Just look at how long some players with even less production than Moore in the NFL has stuck around. Tight end Adrien Robinson, who was famously called the “JPP of tight ends” by Reese, or Jayron Hosley who has been suspended before and constantly being blown by by opposing receivers each made it into their fourth seasons.

While it is evident that Moore was causing some problems for the team, had he been productive and lived up to his expectations on the field, he would still have a roster spot. At the end of the day, if you can produce, especially get after the quarterback, there will be a home for you in the NFL. Moore unfortunately was not producing, and became expendable as his problems were beginning to outweigh the number of sacks he was giving the Giants.
