In Game 1, the Royals were able to outlast the Mets in 14 innings to win on a walk-off sac fly by Eric Hosmer. It was a thrilling Game 1, but Game 2 was rather one-sided affair.

Johnny Cueto has had a difficult postseason, but in the first inning against the Mets, he looked very sharp with a 1-2-3 inning. Jacob deGrom had an easy first inning with three fly balls to Curtis Granderson in right field to retire the Royals in order.

The Mets got their first base-runner of the game, as Lucas Duda was able to find an opening in the shift, but a ground ball double play by Travis d’Arnaud ended the inning.

deGrom was very good once again in the second inning, as he remained perfect against the Royals.

Cueto continued to pitch well in the third inning, as he made it through the Mets’ lineup for the first time without any damage being done. deGrom matched Cueto in the bottom half of the third inning, as he only allowed a walk to Alex Gordon in the inning. After two walks in the inning by Cueto, a double play wasn’t completed by the Royals’ defense on a throwing error by Mike Moustakas. The Mets would make the Royals pay, as Lucas Duda hit an RBI single to score Daniel Murphy for the first run of the game.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, deGrom ran into some serious trouble, as the Royals loaded the bases with two outs in the inning. deGrom was able to keep his composure in the big spot and get Salvador Perez to ground out harmlessly to Wilmer Flores for the third out of the inning.

Cueto was able to rebound nicely in the fifth inning, as he retired the Mets in order after allowing the first run of the game in the fourth. deGrom and the Mets would lose their lead, as the Royals were able to score three runs with a flurry of hits against deGrom. The big hit was a single by Hosmer which scored two runs. Moustakas would add another win with an RBI single in a great at-bat against deGrom. Cueto was able to have an important shutdown inning after the Royals’ barrage in the fifth. The Mets turned to Hansel Robles in the sixth inning, and a nice play by Yoenis Cespedes helped make it a clean inning for Robles.

Cueto continued his dominance of the Mets in the seventh inning, as he shut down the Mets once again. Niese was the next man out of the bullpen for the Mets in the seventh inning, as he once again had a strong inning out of the bullpen.

To no surprise in the eighth inning, Cueto once again put the Mets down in order with a nice play from Escobar to end the inning on a dribbler by Juan Lagares. in the bottom half of the eighth inning, the Royals were able to get to Niese to extend their lead, as a single by Alex Gordon made it a 5-1 game. A sac-fly by Orlando made it a 6-1 games on a ball that nearly left the park. The Royals would continue to poor it on, as Escobar hit an RBI triple to make it 7-1 on a deep fly ball over the head of Lagares in center field.

Cueto stayed on for the ninth inning to finish off his his complete game, and he did just that with a masterful performance. The series will shift back to New York on Friday, as the Mets are desperate for a win.
