There has been a lot of drama surrounding the innings limit of Harvey this season, but with the season on the line in Game 5, it will be all hands on deck for the Mets.

“He wants to pitch,” Collins said to Mike Vorkunov of NJ.com. “He never, I don’t think he ever shied away from the fact he wanted to pitch in the postseason. We’re here now and he’s ready to take the ball when he needs it.”

Collins added to Vorkunov: “We’re going to be smart about it. We’re not going to be foolish and go right to Matt Harvey, and say if Jake’s in trouble in the second inning. So I think we’ve got to be wise enough to know that this will be the first time he’s ever done something like this too. We’re talking about three young pitchers who have never pitched in the postseason and now you’re asking them to do things they’ve never done before as far as pitching out of the bullpen. So we’re going to be smart about the decisions we make.”

In addition to having Harvey on short rest available to pitch out of the bullpen, the Mets will also have the flame-throwing Noah Syndergaard available to pitch.

“This is one of those games where you’re in a situation where everybody’s available,” Collins said to Vorkunov. “You’re looking at Noah’s going to be down there tomorrow, Matt, if we need him, they’ll all be there. So we’ll just see how the game’s moving along, and what the match-ups are going to be and who would be our best options. But certainly it will be everybody we’ve got in the pen.”

The Mets certainly hope that neither Harvey nor Syndergaard will be warming up early in the game, as they can’t afford a poor start from Jacob deGrom against Zack Greinke. With Harvey and Syndergaard both being available to pitch, the Mets’ bullpen instantly becomes very great in Game 5 with a possible bridge of Syndergaard and Harvey to Jeurys Familia if the Mets have the lead.

Depending on how the game progresses will dictate how Collins uses Harvey and Syndergaard, but those are two great weapons to have in their back pocket.
