New York Yankees Clinch Postseason and 10K Wins

These New York Yankees always have to do things the hard way. Going into this series against the Boston Red Sox, they knew they only needed one win, with some help of course, to clinch a postseason berth. However, the next three days they would go on to squander leads and fall out of games late.

More Yankees: Who is the greatest Yankee of all-time?

Then finally, the Yankees put it altogether Thursday night to defeat the Red Sox 4-1. This was a special win though. The Yankees, who have been struggling with injuries and age issues the last couple years can finally breathe a sigh of relief as they made the postseason for the first time in more than two years. Yeah, it will only be in the form of a wild-card game, but they’ll take it.

Not only was the win Thursday night the rewarding end of the road the Yankees have been trying to reach for what seems like forever, but it also marks their 10,000th win in franchise history. It took the Yankees three days against their arch-rival, the Red Sox, and their last home game of the year to deserve it, but they finally made it.

Maybe it’s only right that the Yankees didn’t have an easy time of getting here. Perhaps these Yankees needed to earn this just like all the other Yankee greats and predecessors that have come before them. In my mind though, I think these Yankees needed the adversity to show them that nothing comes easy in baseball.

To get a better idea of what I mean, let’s take a look at the short list of other teams in Major League Baseball to have reached the milestone of 10,000 wins. Only 7 other franchises have accomplished the feat: The San Francisco Giants (10, 863), Chicago Cubs (10,604), Los Angeles Dodgers (10,577), St. Louis Cardinals (10, 571), Atlanta Braves (10,367), Cincinnati Reds (10,320), and the Pittsburgh Pirates (10,239). You might also note that of all these teams, the New York Yankees would also become the first American League club to reach 10,000 wins. To see a list of other teams inching closer to the 10,000 win mark check out baseball-reference.com.

The Yankees have a lot to celebrate tonight. Tonight is special, but let’s hope the momentum from it carries into the postseason. We all know that the Yankees of late never make it easy on themselves, so they’re going to need all the momentum they can get. I guarantee that to most Yankees fans these milestones and achievements will seem almost meaningless if the Yankees fall flat on their faces Tuesday and lose in the AL Wild Card game.

In the meantime, let’s have our eyes set for tomorrow as we tackle the last series of the year and face the Baltimore Orioles in Camden Yards. The Yankees face a good team with solid pitching and hitters much like they will face this postseason. This last test should tell us what to expect and whether we have enough to make a deep run this postseason.
