MLB Power Rankings Week 23

As we head into the first full week of September, we see a little more of the playoff picture clearing up. Along with the Kansas City Royals, it looks like the Los Angeles Dodgers could have wrapped up the NL West with a convincing series victory over the San Francisco Giants; did that result in changes for both teams in the Power Rankings?

While the Dodgers look to have sealed up their division, the other ones are getting tighter. The New York Mets are looking a lot shakier this Monday than they were looking last Monday, as the Washington Nationals have gotten things going and are coming for the top spot in the NL East. Also, the Pittsburgh Pirates picked up a series win over the St. Louis Cardinals; was it enough to knock the Cardinals out of first place in our Power Rankings, a spot they have seemed to occupy virtually all summer?

Which teams are the hottest, and coldest heading into the first week of September? You can find out the answers to all of that by going through our slideshow. It won’t take long to find the coldest team.

Without further ado, let’s check out the MLB Power Rankings at Empire Writes Back as we head into Week 23 of the MLB season.

More from New York Mets

30. Atlanta Braves (54-83) There is ugly, and then there is what the Braves are currently doing. They are riding an MLB worst 12-game losing streak and have lost 19 of their last 20 games. Nothing is going right currently for the Braves as they aren’t hitting and they aren’t pitching; there is virtually nothing to take away as a positive. The end of the season cannot come soon enough, as the Braves will finish a road trip visiting the Phillies to start this upcoming week before trying to play spoiler against the Mets over the weekend. One reason to tune in though is to see Hector Olivera play, the centerpiece of that 13-player trade the Braves pulled off with the Marlins and Dodgers at the trade deadline.

29. Philadelphia Phillies (53-84) The strong second half that the Phillies had gotten off to looks to be far in the rear view mirror; the Phillies are still over .500 for the second half, but that is something that doesn’t look like it will last much longer. Outside of an explosion against Jon Niese and the Mets, the Phillies offense was stagnant this past week, losing the other two games against the Mets and getting swept by the Red Sox. They will be facing off against the Braves to start the week and their homestand in a series that could decide who will be in the cellar of our MLB Power Rankings next week before hosting the Cubs. The youth movement is in full effect in Philadelphia, making for what will be a long finish to the season.

28. Cincinnati Reds (56-79) Hopefully the Reds enjoyed this past week of games in which they went 3-3; taking a series from the Cubs but losing to the Brewers over the weekend. Wins will be tough to come by in the coming week, as they will finish their homestand hosting the Pirates and Cardinals. Things certainly could get ugly as the Reds are just playing out the stretch run of season. But, you wouldn’t know that watching veterans such as Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips, who are still going out and playing hard every night and are still producing despite the current situation in Cincinnati.
