Nikita Whitlock was behind the eight-ball a bit heading into the preseason finale. With the incumbent fullback Henry Hynoski fully healed from his injuries, it will be tough to unseat him as the fullback as he has been with the team for the past five seasons. So, to increase his chances of making the roster, Whitlock showed off some versatility.

Before the game, Whitlock changed his number from 49 to 35 because Cole Farrand already wears 49. Why would he change his number away from what a defender wears if they aren’t on the field at the same time? Well, that’s because Whitlock played defense Thursday night. Whitlock got on the field as a defensive tackle, further improving his chances of making the final 53-man roster.

Whitlock made an impact in his limited role at defensive tackle, recovering the fumble that was forced by Damontre Moore to seal the game for the Giants and avoid any chance at overtime. For that alone, he could receive the MVP award of the game. Standing 5-feet-10 inches tall and weighing 250 pounds, Whitlock has some experience playing defense during his time at Wake Forest, as he is actually transitioning to being a fullback.

He was also all over the field during special teams, as he is the type of high-energy, hard nose player that Tom Coughlin loves. The Giants will desperately try and find a place for him on the roster, and his versatility should help as keeping two fullbacks doesn’t seem to be in the cards. But, if the Giants cannot find a spot for him, expect him to find work quickly as a free agent after an impressive showing.
