15. Cleveland Indians (63-66) Currently the hottest team in baseball, the Indians are riding a five-game winning streak. They may have lost their make up game with the Cubs, but swept the Brewers and Angels to finish the week off strong. The pitching staff has been strong from the starting rotation through the back end of the bullpen, which is the key to a successful team. Josh Tomlin continues to perform, winning twice in this week. Being five games behind the second Wild Card spot, the Indians have a huge week ahead of them if they want to keep moving up, as they start a road trip in Toronto against the hard-hitting Blue Jays before visiting the Tigers.
14. Los Angeles Angels (65-65) The Angels were able to handle business against the fading Tigers, winning two of three games, but were taken out by the Indians, getting swept over the weekend. The Angels offense continues to disappoint, as Mike Trout’s August swoon never went away. He did go 4-4 in Sunday’s loss, so hopefully that is a sign of things to come in the way of him turning things around. The Angels certainly hope so, as they need Trout to get things going; he is the catalyst for their offense.
13. Minnesota Twins (67-63) Not sure how they keep doing it, but the Twins just won’t go away. They picked up two big series wins this past week, defeating the Rays and Astros to keep pace with the Rangers. Kevin Jepsen has proved to be a valuable pick up at the trade deadline, as he has stepped seamlessly into the closer’s role with Glen Perkins dealing with different ailments. If they are to truly take off though, Byron Buxton getting things going would help; the top prospect has struggled atop the Twins order, so the runs have been tough to come by at times. If he ever produces like fellow rookie Miguel Sano, the Twins will be set.
