21. Seattle Mariners (61-70) What could have been for the Mariners had they been hitting like this right from the get go of the season. Robinson Cano has continued his torrid pace since July, as his slash line is now up to a respectable .283/.330/.432 after being at a disappointing .238/.277/.344 heading into July first. If they had had this form of Cano hitting in front of Nelson Cruz all season, a lot of their problems would be gone. Despite his on-base streak ending this week, Nelson still has extraordinary numbers on the season. Felix Hernandez also got back on track, firing eight strong innings against the Athletics in a win this week.

20. Chicago White Sox (61-68) Not sure how many more ways you can say this offense is disappointing, but if you ask Chris Sale, he could probably come up with a few. After delivering another strong outing against the Red Sox, throwing seven shutout innings, the bullpen promptly blew the game and the offense was shut down. That has been the theme of the season for the White Sox, who have the fourth worst offense in baseball and second worst in the AL. One encouraging sign though is Carlos Rodon. After an up-and-down July that leaked into the beginning of August, Rodon has fired off four straight quality starts, dropping his ERA from 5.00 to 4.15 in the process.

19. Boston Red Sox (60-70) It has been a disappointing season in Beantown, but the Red Sox are looking to finish it strong. They won two more series this past week over the White Sox and Mets, as they haven’t lost any of their last six series that were three games or longer. The offense has provided timely production, but the starting pitchers have surprisingly began turning things around. Joe Kelly especially, who has won six straight starts. He put together a strong August, going 6-0 with a 2.68 ERA to not only avoid the bullpen this season, but probably lock up a rotation spot for next season.
