New York Yankees Future is Bright

For the first time in a long time, the New York Yankees have a group of prospects to be excited about. The Yankees, at least for the past decade or so, have always been know to “buy” their talent and never have any minor league prospects. If they ever had any prospects, they were traded away, like Jesus Montero. However, that trade yielded an equally young and supremely talented player in Michael Pineda.

It hasn’t been the New York Yankees typical strategy to save their farm system and let talent grow from within. But, the past couple of years, the Yankees have made it a point to hold onto talent they have in their system.

There has been a push, both from upper management and ownership to slowly change the tide and thinking behind their moves. Yes, the Yankees will always be the Yankees. They will spend the money to win games, they will give out large contracts; see Jacoby Ellsbury and Masahiro Tanaka. However, they are starting to develop their own players for the first time since Robinson Cano.

Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, and Gregory Bird should have all Yankees fans excited. Two of their three big prospects have already impressed at the major league level. Severino is sitting nicely at 2-2 and a 2.17 ERA averaging a strikeout an inning. Greg Bird is batting .245 with 2 home runs in 15 games. He is already looking like his left handed power swing can easily slide into Mark Teixeira‘s place when his contract is up. With these two playing so well, its easy to forget that their best prospect still has yet to be shown.

In the last two seasons Judge has hit .285 and 37 home runs between AA and AAA. Judge will not be a September call up, but next year he could see significant time and will presumably be groomed to take over Carlos Beltran‘s spot in RF after next season.

The New York Yankees have been criticized for years for not having a farm system and crummy prospects. Well, now they have three prospects that could make this team and make a huge contribution going forward. Severino is already making a huge contribution this season, and looks to be a lock for next year’s rotation as well. Bird is filling in nicely for Tex, and the Yankees may have finally found a true backup first basemen for Teixeira instead of having to sign guys like Mark Reynolds and Garrett Jones.

Judge could finally give the Yankees a superstar outfield prospect they haven’t had in ages. He could finally break the mold and be a true 40 home run a year threat this lineup needs. They Yankees are in the middle of a playoff push, and yet it’s the future that should have all Yankee fans excited.
