The New York Mets are in a position no one thought they would be in coming into the regular season. The Washington Nationals were expected to run away with the NL East and be one of the best teams in the National League. That hasn’t gone to plan though, as the Mets are currently pacing the division, leading it by 5.5 games as we head into the final day of August.

While a 5.5 game is the second biggest in the major leagues, behind only the 14 game lead of the Kansas City Royals in the AL Central, there is still plenty of games left in the year. After Sunday, the Mets still have 32 games left in their season, so there is still plenty of work left to do before they are able to wrap up a division title and playoff spot.

We have already seen this season that a team can get hot in an instant and make up ground in the standings quickly. The Mets cannot rest on their laurels and accomplishments that they have already achieved this season as the Nationals are still a very dangerous team that is beginning to get things going.

It would be a poor bet to say the Nationals will not go on some sort of run, so it is imperative that the Mets continue playing the same brand of baseball that they have been playing since the All-Star break and trade deadline. With a dominant starting rotation and a much improved offense, the Mets are poised to finish the season strongly.

For that to happen though, they will need some players to step up in September. There are some players that have struggled recently that the Mets are hoping can get back on track, and others that have figured things out in August that the Mets hope can stay on track.

Which players are the Mets hoping can get things going in September, finishing the season strong as the Mets make their playoff push? Check out our slideshow of the five Mets that need to step up in September for the regular season to result in a playoff berth.
