Petty’s Baby Steps?
Rookie Bryce Petty continues to learn what it takes to thrive as a quarterback for the New York Jets.
Apparently, step one involves never resorting to ordering from a pizza chain when there are so many authentic pizza shops available in the New Jersey or New York area. Bleacher Report’s Katie Richcreek captured the Twitter backlash for Petty’s poor choice.
On a more serious note, Petty made better decisions on the field against the Atlanta Falcons. He put the ball on a rope in some situations and delivered timely passes where only the receiver can make a play. Minor hiccups didn’t diminish his overall gleaming performance from the pocket last week.
Petty finished the game as the more productive quarterback, but you must take into account he faced a less competitive defense. That’s not Petty’s fault, he played well against his competition and deserves recognition for a bounce-back week after a rough start to the preseason.
It’s too early to tell if Bowles considers Petty a candidate for the No. 2 quarterback position with seven-year veteran quarterback Matt Flynn on the roster. Although, it’s plausible to believe another solid performance from Petty forces the coaching staff to view him differently concerning his early progression.
He’ll face a weakened Giants secondary riddled with injuries and should find some success moving the ball in the second half of the game.
