Penalties
There’s nothing worse than running around in the heat for no purpose at all or lack of discipline from teammates, For the Jets, it’s the latter.
New Jersey temperatures didn’t reach a boiling point, but 300-pound men would object.
Bowles acknowledged “professional guys don’t want to run.” He’s absolutely right, but it’s not going to stop the new disciplinarian head coach from drilling accountability and concentration into his player’s psyche.
During practice, fighting isn’t tolerated and anymore than five penalties will result in running gassers at the conclusion of the session. Bowles hopes this course of action leads to self-control and regulation on the field.
The Jets committed 17 penalties for 125 yards during their Week 2 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Obviously, that’s unacceptable for any coach, and Bowles made a concerted effort to correct the mental lapses.
The Jets should play a cleaner game in Week 3 against the Giants considering the discipline they faced during the practices leading up to the game. Bowles didn’t pinpoint what he expects from the any unit on the roster, but it’s clear he wants an overall clean game from everyone on the field.
