The Jets crowded backfield should get some clarity at the conclusion of this contest. Running backs Bilal Powell and Zac Stacy continue to compete for the No. 2 role behind starter Chris Ivory.
Thus far, the tale of the tape favors Powell by a long shot. Both running backs have recorded the same amount of snaps (40), but Powell dominates the rushing yards comparison 62-26, per Pro Football Focus. Powell also grades as the better blocking back in protection schemes.
Stacy will need an above-average performance to overtake Powell as the No. 2 running back on the depth chart based on production.
The No. 3 running back could lose valuable touches in the regular season when Stevan Ridley returns to the field. Stacy should make the 53-man roster, but won’t make a significant impact on the season as the last running back on the depth chart.
Powell enters a contract year on a one-year deal worth $2 million. This season, the Jets will decide to keep him for the long term or allow him to test free agency. Either way, Powell plays like he’s ready for a lucrative long-term deal whether he hits the free-agent market or not.
