21. Chicago White Sox (58-64) The White Sox got another dominant start from Chris Sale to start off their series against the Mariners, as he struck double double digit players for the 30th time since 2012. Despite being six games under .500, they are still hanging around in the AL Wild Card race. With a soft schedule of the Red Sox and Mariners again next week, they could climb back into things if Sale keeps dominating like he did. The offense getting things together like they did in their last four games this past week would help as well.
20. Detroit Tigers (59-64) Three wins in a row to start the week, sweeping the Cubs in two games and winning the first of four against the Rangers made it look like the Tigers would get back into the race. But, that was quickly undone as they subsequently lost the final three games of the series to the Rangers to fall back to five games under .500. They just don’t have the pitching to sustain any success, evident by the fact they traded for Randy Wolf from the Blue Jays minor league system to make a start this week and for the foreseeable future with Daniel Norris potentially sidelined for the remainder of the season. This offense can still produce, but there just isn’t enough pitching.
19. Cleveland Indians (58-68) The Indians keep playing spoiler against the Yankees, winning a second series against them. This time, it was three out of four at Yankee Stadium as the Indians received strong performances from Josh Tomlin, Carlos Carrasco and Trevor Bauer. They also received timely hitting to pick up close wins in a series that the Indians outscored the Yankees y only two runs in four games. The Indians will look to keep things going this upcoming week as they end the road trip with a makeup game in Chicago against the Cubs before a homestand against the Brewers and reeling Angels.
