16. Tampa Bay Rays (58-59) The Rays road trip did not get off to a strong start, as they were swept by the Rangers. They will continue it against the Astros and Athletics this week as their Wild Card chances hang in the balance. This week could make or break the Rays season, as they cannot afford to fall much further behind with teams such as the Blue Jays and Orioles heating up. Their rotation should get a boost with Drew Smyly returning from the 60-Day DL, but their offense still could use some help.
15. Arizona Diamondbacks (57-59) The Diamondbacks reached the .500 mark this season, but then struggled to close things out against the Phillies and lost a weekend series to the Braves. There were some highlights despite the tough losses though, such as Patrick Corbin rounding into shape as he recovers from Tommy John surgery and David Peralta staying hot at the plate. Peralta was right in the thick of back-to-back 13 run games to start the week against the Phillies, getting seven RBI in the two games. Paul Goldschmidt continues his assault on opposing pitchers as well, as his presence in the lineup only helps his teammates.
14. Minnesota Twins (59-58) Just when we thought they might be done for, the Twins responded with a strong week, taking series from the Rangers and Indians. They have a huge road trip starting this week when they will be playing against the AL East, all teams they will be fighting for a playoff spot against. The trip will start in New York against the Yankees before moving on to Baltimore then Tampa Bay. The back injury that sidelined Phil Hughes could explain his recent struggles, and getting him back in the rotation will help. Ervin Santana needs to figure things out as well.
