18. Detroit Tigers (56-61) The Tigers have lost three consecutive series as the playoffs become tougher and tougher to see in their future. They could have made a statement this week against the Royals and Astros, but were unable to do much, salvaging only one win in each series. But, if they are to get back into the playoff race, having Miguel Cabrera back in the lineup will certainly help their cause. He has multiple hits in his last two games already as he looks like he didn’t miss a beat while on the DL.
17. Washington Nationals (58-59) The Nationals are free falling and can thank the Pirates for only being 4.5 games behind the Mets in the NL East. The Buccos swept the Mets in Queens, which kept the Nationals deficit the same because they were handled easily by the Giants out west. It has been a disastrous trip out west, as they won the series opener against the Dodgers but are now riding a six-game losing streak, the longest in baseball. Maybe a visit to Colorado can wake up their bats a bit, as this team is playing Matt Williams right onto the hot seat as they now sit under .500.
16. Tampa Bay Rays (58-59) The Rays road trip did not get off to a strong start, as they were swept by the Rangers. They will continue it against the Astros and Athletics this week as their Wild Card chances hang in the balance. This week could make or break the Rays season, as they cannot afford to fall much further behind with teams such as the Blue Jays and Orioles heating up. Their rotation should get a boost with Drew Smyly returning from the 60-Day DL, but their offense still could use some help.
