9. July 31, 2015: The Detroit Tigers trade OF Yoenis Cespedes to the Mets for pitchers Luis Cessa (minors) and Michael Fulmer (minors) to the Detroit Tigers.
The Mets of 2015 are all about their young pitching. Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Zack Wheeler, Noah Syndergaard, and Steven Matz are the future. While I am a firm believer in the saying that “pitching and defense wins championships” a team still has to score runs to win. It was clear that the Mets’ offense was struggling so much for most of the season, that without any offensive upgrades, the team would not contend.
Enter Cespedes a five-tool player who brings so much to the table. He has a rocket for an arm and hits for power.
What I think is remarkable about the trade is that the Mets didn’t have to give up any player from the rotation they have been developing for years. Fulmer is a good prospect, but it’s too early to tell what the impact will be long term. Nonetheless Cespedes is certainly providing the Mets a shot in the arm that has them in the thick of a pennant race for the first time in several seasons.
