Top Prospect Shows What He’s Got

The Mets have plenty of experience seeing what a top pitching prospect can do for a team. Over the past couple of seasons they have seen the likes of Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Zack Wheeler, Steven Matz and Noah Syndergaard come through their system. We will see three of those four in this series, but the Rockies also have a top pitching prospect of their own they will showcase in the series.

More from New York Mets

Jon Gray is the top pitching prospect the Rockies have, and he made his MLB debut last week against the Seattle Mariners. It was a mixed bag for Gray, who went only four innings, surrendering three runs, two earned, to go with four strikeouts. That outing came in Coors Field though, where pitcher’s dreams go to die. Pitching in a friendlier environment such as Citi Field for his second start, will the results be better?

We’re predicting yes, as Gray will showcase the talent that made him the top pitching prospect in the Rockies system and 24th ranked prospect in baseball according to Baseball America. While the Mets offense is greatly improved with the moves they made at the deadline, they are still prone to lapses in production; just take a look at their series with the Rays this past weekend.

Because of that, we are expecting Gray to set a couple of new career highs against the Mets in the series opener. He will pitch into the sixth inning and will strikeout six Mets, giving up only two runs. It will give the Rockies a chance to win the first game of the series and continue their momentum they built against the Nationals.

That is exactly what will happen, as the Rockies will give Gray his first career major league win Monday night in the series opener.
