Offensive Explosions

It has been no secret throughout the season that the Mets offense has struggled. But, in recent weeks, the additions of Juan Uribe, Kelly Johnson and Yoenis Cespedes have paid big dividends as the Mets offense has really picked things up. With the added talent, the Mets not only strengthened their everyday lineup, but also strengthened their bench in the process as well. The moves have paid off right away, as the other Mets players have picked up their production with the added help as well.

Since acquiring Uribe and Johnson from the Atlanta Braves, the Mets have scored 67 runs in 11 games. That comes out to an average of 6.1 per game, well above their season average of 3.7 per game. Over that span, the Mets have gone 9-2 as the team has been rejuvenated.

The offensively challenged Rays, who are second to last in the AL in runs scored, have also got their bats going in recent days. They have scored only 404 runs on the season, but in their last six games they have scored at least four runs. They were able to win only half of those games though, as their pitching staff let them down a couple times.

Part of the recent success for the offense has been because of Asdrubal Cabrera and Evan Longoria. Cabrera is riding a nine-game hitting streak, hitting .500 over the stretch of games, going 17-for-34 at the plate. Longoria also has a nice streak going, as he has reached base in 13 consecutive games, batting .396 over the length of his streak.

Will either of these hot offensive streaks continue over the weekend? It could be tough, as each team has some of their better starting pitchers set to toe the rubber.
