New York Giants Officials Don’t Meet With Jason Pierre-Paul

As if the situation surrounding New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul wasn’t weird and mired in enough mystery already, another layer was added this afternoon. According to Adam Schefter, Giants officials made the trip to South Florida to see Pierre-Paul, but were not able to. They left Wednesday without ever getting the chance to visit or talk with Pierre-Paul.

Pierre-Paul has not yet signed his franchise tag tender with the Giants, so he is technically not under contract with the team. This seems to be part of the problem, as the Giants officials decided to take the trip without talking to Pierre-Paul himself first. They went down to check on the well being of Pierre-Paul and gauge the injuries that he suffered. But, once arriving they were met with a cold shoulder and not welcomed once they got there.

The injuries that Pierre-Paul suffered to both of his hands do not seem to be career-threatening at this point, but the full extent is still yet to be revealed. Right now all that is known is that he suffered severe burns to both hands, and possible nerve damage to his finger. He is lucky to come away without serious, career threatening injuries as he made an extremely poor decision but will not pay as dearly as some other people.

One of those other people being C.J. Wilson of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The two-year veteran also suffered a significant injury because of an incident with fireworks during Fourth of July weekend. Unlike Pierre-Paul though, Wilson does not seem to have come out of it unscatched as his injuries are considered more serious, some saying he has lost two fingers.

For Pierre-Paul, his future with the Giants is extremely clouded. They have supposedly retracted their long-term offer that was on the table, but even given the situation it was not expected that Pierre-Paul would sign. The franchise tender is still on the table though, as the Giants will not allow their top defensive player enter free agency unrestricted at this stage.

The real concern for Pierre-Paul is that the Giants have no idea if they will have him for training camp or the beginning of the season at this time. There are some people saying he could be placed on the non-football injury list, costing him the first six games of the season, while others say he should be good to go.

Whatever happens, this will be a story worth following during a time there isn’t normally any real NFL news to report.
