9. New York Yankees (44-38) The Yankees lost a series to the Angels to start the week, but picked up the important series victory over the Rays during the weekend. Jacoby Ellsbury’s rehab has not gone exactly according to plan, as fatigue in his legs has caused him to sit out three of the five rehab games he was at. But, the plan is still for him to return prior to the All-Star break. Masahiro Tanaka has struggled now in three consecutive starts though, and is something the Yankees will have to keep an eye on.
8. Los Angeles Angels (44-38) There was some friction between the front office, coaching staff and players recently as they were not on the same page in regards to game preparation. As a result, the front office saw some changes, and since, the Angels have gotten things on track. They have won three in a row, and eight of their last 10, including a sweep of the Rangers this weekend. Albert Pujols, one of the players that spoke up in the meeting, has been a great source of production with 25 home runs and 53 RBI. Mike Trout again looks like an MVP candidate, and the Angels look like a team that could be major buyers at the deadline to either add to their lineup or pitching staff.
7. Los Angeles Dodgers (46-37) The Dodgers won a series against the Diamondbacks before surprisingly losing to the Mets over the weekend. Their offense was virtually nonexistent against the Mets, as they scored only five runs in the three games. Part of the struggles there are because of Yasiel Puig, who is four for his last 27 at the plate. Also, Kenley Jansen is in no trouble as the team’s closer, but has given up a run in three straight appearances. One way for both players to get back on track? Facing the lowly Phillies and recently hot, but still poor, Brewers to finish their first half.
