New York Mets’ starting pitcher Jacob deGrom was able to add some more hardware to his mantel at home, being named NL Co-Player of the Week with Los Angeles Dodgers’ starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw.

The New York Mets have been hit hard with injuries, causing inconsistency in the lineup and on their staff. With the constant shuffling around of players, it is always nice when you have a couple of guys you know you can count on everyday in the lineup, or every fifth day on the mound. For the Mets, one of those guys is Jacob deGrom, who has picked up right where he left off as NL Rookie of the Year last season.

deGrom has been especially solid recently, as his performance last week earned him NL Player of the Week honors. In two starts, deGrom went 2-0, tossing 15 innings and allowing only two earned runs on seven hits and three walks. He also added a robust 18 strikeouts, as he had some dominating stuff while taking out the San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks. Both wins proved to be meaningful, as his victory against the Padres was the only one the Mets were able to get against the Padres, while the victory over the Diamondbacks got the Mets the split of a four-game series.

deGrom will be sharing the Player of the Week honors though, as Clayton Kershaw was just as dominant in his two starts against the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies. Interestingly enough, the two had almost identical weeks as Kershaw went 15 innings, allowing only two earned runs and striking out 18 as well. The amount of walks was the same as well, with the only difference coming in the amount of hits allowed, as Kershaw allowed only five compared to six for deGrom.

The Mets have to be extremely happy with what they are getting from deGrom recently, as some of the other starters have fell on tougher times. He is riding a hot streak though, as deGrom has put together five consecutive quality starts. That followed a rough patch of games where he allowed at least four runs in three out of four starts. The Mets have to be glad deGrom has gotten back on track as they desperately needed it, and it has helped them retake the lead in the NL East over the Washington Nationals.

This will be the second time that deGrom has won Player of the Week honors, as he also won it once last season as a rookie for the week that ended July 27th.
