3. Houston Astros (34-24) After taking the first three games of the series against the Orioles, the Astros lost the series finale and then were swept by the Blue Jays over the weekend. The loss in the series finale against the Blue Jays was a bit of bad luck, as Jonathan Villar collided with Jose Reyes on second base, extending the inning for the Blue Jays to get a walk off. Even with the slight bump in the road, the Astros are still leading the AL West by 3.5 games.

2. Minnesota Twins (33-23) Anyone who had the Twins leading the AL one week into June raise your hand. There shouldn’t be many, if any hands up, as the success for the Twins has come out of nowhere. They were expected to be closer to 32 than two in any MLB Power Rankings this season, but they continue to prove people wrong every week. Even a losing week wasn’t enough to knock the them down, as the Twins and Astros are tied a game ahead of the Royals. A reason for that, at least retaining that spot heading into next week, is Mike Pelfrey, who fired yet another strong start Sunday to avoid the sweep at the hands of the Brewers.

1. St. Louis Cardinals (38-19) The Cardinals could have had a week they lost every game, and there is still a chance they would still have retained this spot; they are looking that much better than everyone else right now. That didn’t happen of course, as the Cardinals instead increased their MLB best record even more, now sitting 4.5 games ahead of the next closest teams in the Twins and Astros. For the second consecutive weekend, a big series against the Dodgers didn’t look too big for this team, as they won it again. Jhonny Peralta continues to make teams kick themselves who wouldn’t consider him as a free agent last year, and the Cardinals are now reaping the rewards.
