Going back in time a bit when basketball was still gaining its legs, the Knicks had one of the best point guards around in Dick McGuire. McGuire is one of the Knicks’ all-time greats, as he played eight seasons with the team, and has his No. 15 hanging in the rafters.
McGuire was one of the better passers in the league in his time, as he finished second in assists per game four times in his career. In his eight years with the Knicks, McGuire averaged 8.0 PPG, 5.6 APG, and 4.2 RPG.
After his playing days were over, McGuire would go on to be a coach for seven season with the two teams that he played for in the Knicks and Detroit Pistons. Despite being a Hall-of-Fame player, McGuire didn’t have any success as a coach. In his seven seasons on the sidelines, he had a record of 197-260, and didn’t have a single winning season. Players from that long ago tend to get forgotten, but McGuire was certainly one of the Knicks’ all-time greats
