The player Mets fans want, and truly deserve if this team is to start to truly turn the corner. Castro made his third career All-Star game in 2014, and deservedly so as he led all qualified shortstops in BA and finished third in slugging behind free agent Hanley Ramirez and Jhonny Peralta.
It will not be cheap to acquire Castro, but he fits perfectly into the plans for the Mets. He is under team control for six more seasons, as he is already locked into an extension; he will only be 30 years old at the end of this contract. He does not have the greatest glove, finishing with -0.2 defensive WAR, but makes up for it with his bat, which is really what the Mets would be looking to acquire. He finished with a 2.9 offensive war in 2014.
It will probably cost the Mets some combination of Zack Wheeler, Noah Syndergaard and Miguel Montero in addition to others to land Castro, but at this point it may be worth it. Mets management can no longer sell the future to their fans. The future is now, and acquiring a player with the talent of Castro would help put this Mets team over the hump.
