Perry Fewell getting creative with Giants Defense

Coming off of a season in which the Giants defense took a step back in nearly every significant category, defensive coordinator Perry Fewell understands how important it is to mix things up a little.

So far this preseason, Fewell has done just that.

The Giants, who typically run a 4-3 defense, have shown several formations this preseason where a defensive end is standing up, opposite a linebacker, and close to the line of scrimmage – a formation that looks a lot like a 3-4 defensive scheme.

"“Schematics,” Fewell said, explaining moving his defensive ends from side to side. “Looking at the offseason, I thought this would be a good change for us. Just schematics.”"

After being asked by reporters if the Giants will show some 3-4 schemes this season, Fewell said he will work with the personnel he has.

"“We’ll be very multiple,” Fewell said. “Personnelwise, we have guys that fit a 4-3, we have guys that fit a lot of different defensive combinations. So I’m going to build a defense that fits our personnel.”"

Fewell has shown throughout camp that he is willing to try anything if it means returning the Giants defense to the success they have enjoyed over recent years.  Up until this point Fewell has used versatile defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins at defensive end, and also used defensive ends like Tuck, Adrian Tracy and Justin Trattou with the linebackers in 7-on-7 drills.

If the Giants are going to return to the playoffs this season they are going to need big improvement out of their defense, and the new looks that Fewell has been experimenting with just may provide the answer this defense needs.
