New York Knicks guard Allonzo Trier has gotten a new two-way contract. With the new deal he becomes the future face of the Knicks.

The New York Knicks gave rookie guard Allonzo Trier a two-way contract on Thursday.

The contract comes after Trier has been on the Knicks roster for two months and with the 45 days of allowable NBA service about to expire.

According to Ian Begely of ESPN, the deal is for two years and $7 million with a team option for the second year.

Trier will make about $3.4 million this season and $3.5 million in 2019-20 under the bi-annual exception. Trier’s contract is the biggest contract in the history of the two-way format.

The Knicks cut Ron Barker, who started 14 games and averaged 3.3 points in three seasons with the Knicks, to make room for Trier.

Knicks President Steve Mills released a statement about Barker, per Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News:

"“Ron is a true professional and we thank him for all of his contributions during his time with the Knicks. His dedication and passion for the game are unquestioned and have been truly appreciated by our fans and organization. We wish him all the best.”"

Even though Trier wasn’t drafted, he has been impressive. This season he’s averaging 11.3 points on 39 percent shooting with 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists. Trier’s new deal means that he is the future of the Knicks.

It’s no secret that the Knicks are currently in rebuild mode. Kristaps Porzingis is currently out due to an injury and it is unknown when he will return. The Knicks also have rookie sensations Kevin Knox and Mitchell Robinson.

Trier, Knox and Robinson are the future of the Knicks. They are all young, good players and are becoming the NBA’s next big stars.

They have the potential to make the Knicks a championship winning team in the future.

The Knicks are hoping to land a top free agent next summer.

They are projected to have less than $30 million in cap space with Trier’s new deal. If the Knicks decline Trier’s option then he would be a restricted free agent, and the Knicks would save $3.5 million and cap space and could still re-sign him, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.

Declining Trier’s option is something that the Knicks shouldn’t do.

He is the team’s future and could become the face of the franchise , like Porzingis has become the face of the Knicks.

Losing Trier would hurt the Knicks rebuild and would mean they wouldn’t be able to win a title.
