Even though he is playing in Single-A, Tim Tebow is one of the most-talked about players in the minor leagues right now. He gave fans another reason to be excited when he blasted a walk-off home run for the St. Lucie Mets on Thursday night.

While the New York Mets are struggling to remain relevant this season, Tim Tebow is having some success down in their minor league system.

On Thursday night, the St. Lucie Mets were hosting the Daytona Tortugas in the second game of a doubleheader. St. Lucie had won the first game 1-0.

Tebow came up to bat with one out and nobody on base in the bottom of the seventh inning with the game tied at four.

In the minor leagues, each game of a doubleheader is seven innings instead of nine, so Tebow had a chance to win the game for his team. He was able to do just that, as he hit the ball over the left field fence for a walk-off homer.

When Tebow first announced that he wanted to try playing professional baseball almost a year ago, no one really took him seriously.

New York signed him to a minor league contract in September of 2016. Most people assumed that the move was mainly made for entertainment purposes, as the former college football star and NFL quarterback is extremely popular among sports fans.

The Mets have definitely been getting a lot of fans to go to their minor league games whenever Tebow is playing. However, he is starting to actually impress people with his play, rather than just his presence.

The Mets promoted Tebow from the Columbia Fireflies to the St. Lucie Mets on June 25. Columbia is their Low-A minor league affiliate, while St. Lucie is considered their High-A team.

He has been tearing it up ever since being promoted. As reported by Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, Tebow’s homer gave him an 11-game hitting streak and upped his batting average to .327.

In 19 games for St. Lucie, Tebow has three home runs and 11 RBI. He has certainly exceeded expectations thus far.

As Tebow continues to work his way through the minor leagues, one can only wonder where he will be in September.

If the Mets continue to struggle in the second half of the season, general manager Sandy Alderson could decide to trade some of his veteran players. In that situation, Tebow could be primed for a September call-up.

Although Alderson has recently shot down the idea, Tebow would help the Mets draw a good amount of fans during the final month of the season, even if they are irrelevant in the standings.

Tebow-mania could be coming to Flushing this fall.
