The New York Yankees are grooming prospect Gleyber Torres to become the next starting third baseman. With Chase Headley struggling, his opportunity could come this season.

New York Yankees third baseman Chase Headley might have to find himself a new day job sooner than he thinks.

The typical everyday third baseman is struggling mightily this season. His lack of hitting is leaving the door open for top prospect Gleyber Torres to take the spot right out of his hands.

Torres has been lights out in the minors batting .260, with 5 homeruns, and 21 runs batted in. He is showing signs of being a solid everyday player, and continues to grow.

The hope most Yankee fans have is that Torres will come up by next season, but with Headley in-and-out of the lineup, he might get that call a little sooner.

It wouldn’t be the worst thing to give Headley some competition, but I’m not sure if the Yanks should rush Torres to the majors.

He needs to continue to mold his hitting before getting the call. Headley still has a lot of season to find his bat as well.

Rushing Torres to the bigs could be detrimental to his growth as a player. Besides, the Yankees signed Headley as an interim guy, so they should just ride him out.

If they want to spread rumors to get Headley hot again, that’s fine. If they really want to call Torres up, then it’s a coin flip.

Overall, it’s not the move to bring Torres up just yet. There is no reason to rush him up because he could lose all of his mojo.

We have seen this before in the majors, and Yankees fans don’t want to see it with such a promising young player. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out for Headley, and for the Bombers.
