The New York Mets finally received a good start from Robert Gsellman, who helped defeat the Milwaukee Brewers on the mound and at the plate.

The New York Mets have struggled throughout 2017. Injuries have been a big factor why, as the Mets depth has been tested around the diamond. Where they have suffered most, arguably, is on their pitching staff.

The Mets have yet to see Steven Matz or Seth Lugo on a major league mound this season; both were placed on the disabled list right before the regular season got underway. Noah Syndergaard tore his lat muscle, putting him on the DL for a lengthy period of time as well. The bullpen has been undone

The bullpen has been undone with Jeurys Familia undergoing surgery for a blood clot. With the bullpen taxed and struggling, the Mets have been desperate for their starting pitchers to pick things up.

There has been a lot of inconsistency in the Mets rotation thus far. Jacob deGrom and Zack Wheeler have been solid thus far, otherwise, the Mets have received sporadic production. One of the underwhelming producers has been Robert Gsellman.

Gsellman came out of nowhere in 2016 to help keep the Mets rotation. There were high hopes for him in 2017, but he had been coming up short most of the season. Heading into Monday’s start against the Milwaukee Brewers Gsellman had a 6.45 ERA. General manager Sandy Alderson even said that Gsellman would probably be moved to the bullpen once Matz and Lugo come off the DL.

Getting a promotion of sorts could sometimes negatively impact a player. Gsellman did not let it impact him, at least negatively, as he threw the best game of the season on Monday.

On the mound, Gsellman provided the Mets with seven strong innings. He allowed only three hits and two walks which resulted in two runs, one being earned. Gsellman also struck out five Brewers.

Gsellman also helped his cause at the plate. He knocked in two of the four Mets runs in the game. In the fifth inning he hit a sacrifice fly, and in the sixth inning, he drew a bases loaded walk.

Gsellman pushed his record to 3-3 on the season with the victory, while the Mets moved yo 22-27 on the season. Gsellman should have at least one more start before Matz or Lugo return from the DL. The Mets are hoping he can deliver one more good start and carry that momentum over to the bullpen.
