New York Jets first-round draft pick Jamal Adams was selected as the best acquisition of the team for the offseason.

The New York Jets had a relatively quiet offseason in free agency. They made plenty of subtractions, but few impact additions. The Jets are in a clear rebuild, so they are currently tearing down the roster. It resulted in plenty of veterans, such as Brandon Marshall, Darrelle Revis, and Nick Mangold, being released. Breno Giacomini and Nick Folk were also released.

The Jets are beginning a true rebuild, so they weren’t active in free agency. Handing out long-term contracts to older players makes little sense to a rebuild. Instead, the Jets tried filling out some holes with veteran placeholders. Quarterback Josh McCown and cornerback Morris Claiborne would fall into that category.

The Jets took a big risk with offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum. They are hoping he can add stability to left tackle after Ryan Clady was injured last year. They are also hoping Chandler Catanzaro can return to form replacing Folk as their kicker.

If those players pan out, the Jets found some bargains on free agency. All of them come with huge risks and question marks though and could flame out as easily as succeed. That is why they are not the Jets best acquisition this offseason.

That designation would go to first round pick, Jamal Adams. The Jets received some good luck in the draft to land Adams. Adams fell into their laps because of how the board fell ahead of them. It was reminiscent of 2015 when the Jets had arguably the best player, defensive end Leonard Williams, fall into their laps with the sixth pick.

It happened again this year, resulting in their best acquisition of the offseason. ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini selected Adams as the Jets best acquisition of the offseason, and we agree. Here is what Cimini said about Adams being acquired.

"After a low-budget approach to free agency, the Jets needed to hit a home run in the draft — and they did. Not only will Adams help shore up a weak position, but his strong intangibles will improve the locker room culture. His reputation preceded him. When team officials gave him a tour of the facility the day after the draft, staffers emerged from their offices and applauded. — Rich Cimini"

Most likely, there were tons of applause when Adams was on the board still with the Jets on the clock. He will help shore up the safety position, which the Jets doubled down on with their second round pick. Adams and Marcus Maye give the Jets a new dynamic safety duo that should be the backbone of their defense for years to come.

Adams was an excellent selection for a number of reasons. He is a great safety and will help improve what became a toxic locker room in recent seasons. Adams will have an impact right off the bat.

Along with Leonard Williams, the Jets now have two legitimate building blocks for the future. Williams can control the defense from the front, with Adams handling things at the back end. There may not be many wins for the Jets this season, but there will be exciting players to watch all season long.
