New York Yankees: Gleyber Torres Promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
After a great start to the 2017 season with the Trenton Thunder, New York Yankees No. 1 overall prospect Gleyber Torres is once step closer to making it to the Bronx.
Gleyber Torres was called up to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, following the Thunder’s 1-0 loss to the Portland Sea Dogs. The 20-year-old phenom had gotten off to a blazing hot start this year, hitting .273 with five home runs, 18 RBI, 33 hits and 22 runs scored.
The No. 2 ranked prospect in all of baseball has shown the versatility and production to warrant a call-up to the major leagues if he continues to play well in Scranton. The Yankees had him play third base, second base and his natural short stop position in Trenton, and it’s expected that he’ll do the same with the RailRiders.
Torres appears to be on track to join the big club later this season, and the current struggles of Chase Headley have fueled speculation that Torres has been promoted to Triple-A in order to be ready to help a potential playoff push in August and September if Headley continues to struggle.
"“He is a shortstop learning second and third,” Brian Cashman told Joel Sherman of the New York Post. “This is the best way to prepare him to provide protection in case we need him in the majors.”“He checked every box necessary in that league [Eastern League],” Cashman said to Sherman."
Regardless, Torres is ahead of schedule and thoroughly dominated during his stint with the Thunder. Triple-A ball is a huge step up, however, as Torres will face consistently better pitching against plenty of major league-ready arms.
