The 2017 NBA Draft Lottery was not kind to the New York Knicks.

The New York Knicks came into the 2017 NBA Draft Lottery with a slim chance of moving into the top-three of the 2017 NBA Draft. The Knicks had an 18.3 percent chance of moving up into the top-three. They had a 57.2 percent chance of sticking in the seventh spot.

The second likeliest outcome for the Knicks was falling to the eighth spot, which was at 22.6 percent. There was a slight chance of falling to the ninth spot, as the Knicks had a 1.8 percent chance of falling that far.

As the Knicks luck would be, they fell down to the eighth spot. It was the second loss that the Knicks took this offseason without even playing a game. The Knicks also lost a tiebreaking coin flip with the Minnesota Timberwolves, putting them in the seventh spot.

As a result of that coin flip, the Timberwolves started a spot ahead of the Knicks and will be a spot ahead of them in the 2017 NBA Draft order, selecting seventh.

More from New York Knicks

This is a big loss for the Knicks. They are in desperate need of a point guard, which this draft has plenty of. Unfortunately for them, they are considered the top prospects in this year’s class. Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball are expected to be the top two picks in the draft.

Kentucky’s De’Aaron Fox has been moving up draft boards as well. If the Knicks are lucky, French point guard Frank Ntilikana could be available. As the draft process continues, he may also find himself moving up the draft board. There are some draft analysts that believe Ntilikana could be a top-five pick had he played college basketball this season.

The other top point guard, Dennis Smith, is also expected to go in the top-five. The Knicks will have to wait another year to add their point guard of the future.

There are other solid prospects that the Knicks could land with their pick. But, falling out of the top-seven severely limits their chances of adding an impact point guard. New York should have a good chance at landing another building block alongside Kristaps Porzingis, but it may not be the point guard that they covet.
