Last year, New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese shocked people by selecting Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple. The Giants surprised a lot of people again in Round One of the 2017 NFL Draft.

With the 23rd overall pick, the Giants selected Ole Miss tight end, Evan Engram. It was a bit of a shocking pick given some of the other players that were available, such as Miami Hurricanes tight end David Njoku and Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster.

While Engram was not a player many people, if any, had being selected by the Giants with their first pick, he does fill a need.

More from New York Giants

The Giants received the worst production from the tight end position last season in the NFL based on Pro Football Focus grades. The only direction they can go is up with the selection of Engram and the signing of Rhett Ellison.

While there were some people perplexed and disappointed, Engram does fill a need. The Giants are now loaded offensively with weapons for Eli Manning to throw to. Will they be able to fill out the offensive line and help give him protection?

There were a number of solid offensive linemen prospects that dropped out of Round One and will be available on Day 2. There are also a number of linebackers and defensive linemen available, both of which the Giants can use. Will the Giants be able to land players at any of those positions on Day 2?

Check out our slideshow of five players the Giants should target in the second and third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
