The New York Mets were swept by the Washington Nationals after being defeated on Sunday Night Baseball.

The New York Mets knew they would have their hands full with the Washington Nationals. The two teams are expected to compete for the NL East division title throughout the season. Facing off with the Nationals is difficult enough when you are on top of your game. When you are shorthanded, it is an uphill battle.

The Mets entered this series against the Nationals with major injury concerns. Yoenis Cespedes didn’t play in the series, Travis d’Arnaud and Asdrubal Cabrera were banged up, and Lucas Duda and Wilmer Flores were placed on the disabled list. If that wasn’t bad enough, the Mets then suffered a sweep at the hands of the Nationals.

The Mets and Nationals faced off on Sunday Night Baseball. Things couldn’t have started much worse for the Mets. Zack Wheeler was the starter and was in trouble right from the start. The first three batters of the game reached base as Adam Eaton was hit by a pitch, which was followed by singles from Trae Turner and Bryce Harper.

More from New York Mets

Wheeler would strike out Ryan Zimmerman, but former Mets second baseman Daniel Murphy would torture his old team once again. Murphy launched a 408 bomb into centerfield for a grand slam, staking the Nationals to an early 4-0 lead.

The Mets would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Conforto hit another leadoff homer, as he is taking well to batting atop the order and playing every day.

The Mets would strike again in the third inning. Conforto once again got things started, singling to start the things off. Max Scherzer would retire Cabrera and Jay Bruce after that, but then Neil Walker got to him. Walker hit a home run to right field to cut the deficit to one run. That would be as close as the Mets would get.

Zimmerman would give the Nationals some insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning with a two-run homer to push the lead to 6-3. The grand slam in the first inning would prove to be more than enough.

Scherzer was visibly frustrated after the Walker home run, as he was yelling at himself on the mound. Whatever he yelled at himself worked, as Scherzer locked in after the Walker home run. The Mets would get only one more hit off Scherzer the remainder of the night, a single by Conforto in the fifth. He was quickly erased as Cabrera grounded into a double play.

The Mets are digging themselves an early hole, as they are now 5.5 games behind the Nationals in the NL East. There is obviously a lot of time remaining in the season, but the Mets have to do their best to make sure that lead doesn’t begin ballooning on them.

The Mets have now lost eight of their last nine games. They will look to get back on track as they welcome the Atlanta Braves to Citi Field to begin a series on Tuesday. Robert Gsellman will be taking the mound and be opposed by the Braves’ Julio Teheran.
