New York Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery was impressive in his debut. Now, he will try to build off of that early success.

Coming into the season, the New York Yankees had plenty of question marks in their starting rotation. Aside from Masahiro Tanaka, there wasn’t much of a reason to be confident in any of the other starters.

In addition to a lack of confidence in the rotation, the Yankees also entered the season without a fifth starter. However, the Yankees have found the final man for the rotation, and it is Jordan Montgomery.

In Montgomery’s debut against the Tampa Bay Rays, he was able to pitch 4.2 innings, and he totaled seven strikeouts and allowed two earned runs. Considering it was his first start, Montgomery was able to handle his nerves rather well.

"“It’s going to be a lot nicer going out there knowing what to expect, knowing I’ve done it before and I can settle in and know what I can expect and know what I can get done,” Montgomery said to Fred Kerber of the New York Post."

One of the reasons why Montgomery had success was because of his unique arm angle. In addition to being a lefty, releasing the ball from a strange arm angle will certainly help Montgomery.

"“Guys don’t see that arm angle very often,” Montgomery said to Kerber. “They’re just not used to seeing the ball coming out there.”"

Even though he didn’t get the win, Montgomery earned himself another start for the Yankees. On Monday, he is scheduled to pitch against the Chicago White Sox.

"“That was nice to get rid of all doubt in my head that I didn’t belong here. Just get out there and play baseball,” Montgomery said to Kerber. “I think it will be the same. Same as every game I’ve ever pitched. Get nerves, settle in, find my tempo and compete.”"

After sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals, the Yankees are one of the hottest teams in baseball. The White Sox have also gotten off to a good start this season. For Montgomery, he will have a chance to continue to solidify his spot in the rotation.
