New York Giants Rumors: There does not seem to be legitimate interest in defensive tackle Jared Odrick at this time.

Recent New York Giants rumors revolved around defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins. The Hankins saga ended this past week, as he agreed to a three-year, $30 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts. With Hankins now gone, the Giants need to go with Plan B along the defensive line.

Earlier in the offseason, there were reports that the Giants were interested in defensive tackle Jared Odrick. Odrick was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars and has received little interest this offseason; a visit to the New England Patriots earlier in free agency is his only known visit, where he passed a physical.

Once Hankins was signed away by the Colts, the Giants interest reportedly grew in Odrick. But, it would seem that those reports were premature.

More from Giants Rumors

ESPN New York’s Jordan Raanan was asked by a fan in his weekly mailbag about Odrick. The fan asked if Odrick’s skill set would better fit with the other defensive linemen that the Giants have than Hankins.

Raanan said that there doesn’t appear to be anything that will come from the Odrick interest right now. Raanan added that the Giants are actually looking for another run-stuffing defensive tackle in the middle to go alongside Damon Harrison.

Jay Bromley and Robert Thomas are the only other defensive tackles currently on the roster. Both are more shoot-the-gap defensive tackles according to Raanan, meaning a run stuffing defensive tackle could be more of a priority.

Like Raanan said, getting a player to help against the run on early downs next to Harrison is important. Having another player that can eat up space in the run game is also important in case Harrison is ever injured and is forced to miss time.

There have been some mock drafts with the Giants going defensive line early on in the draft. Michigan State’s Malik McDowell has been one player mocked to the Giants previously. Raanan notes that if the Giants are unable to do so in the 2017 NFL Draft, a player such as Odrick could become an option later on in the offseason.

With Hankins leaving, the defensive line has moved up the Giants priority list in the draft. Defensive line help, along with offensive line and linebacker, should all be positions the Giants address early on in the draft.
