New York Jets Rumors: Bryce Petty could be on the chopping block if the Jets select a quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft.

New York Jets rumors are bound to pick up with the 2017 NFL Draft quickly approaching. The Jets are one of the teams that could really change the tide of the draft. The Jets own the No.6 overall pick, and there are a number of directions they could go in.

New York has a lot of needs. The roster is barren of many talents as they began purging their roster of veterans and took it another step this offseason. They have not done well in drafts in recent years, leaving the roster void of many building blocks; right now Leonard Williams is the only legitimate building block defensively.

Offensively there is arguably even less to get excited about. The Jets need to rebuild their offensive line. They have some intriguing skill position players such as Quincy Enunwa, Robby Anderson, Charone Peake, and Bilal Powell. But, the biggest hole offensively and on the whole roster is at quarterback.

More from Jets Rumors

Mike Maccagnan has yet to find his franchise quarterback. The team found success in one season with Ryan Fitzpatrick, but he regressed to the mean in a big way in 2016. He was released to free agency, along with Geno Smith.

That left the Jets with Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg as the only quarterbacks on the roster. Veteran journeyman Josh McCown was signed this offseason, but the Jets could look to add another quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft.

There is a chance that happens. The Jets are reportedly big fans of North Carolina’s Mitchell Trubisky. Back in December, the Trubisky was referred to as the Jets guy in the 2017 NFL Draft. They also hosted him for a visit this past week, attending his Pro Day and holding a private workout previously as well.

Right now, Petty is on the shakiest ground of all the quarterbacks. The New York Daily News reports that if a quarterback is selected, Petty is most likely the quarterback that will be released.

Petty struggled last season when pressed into duty, and the Jets are not going to cut Hackenberg without seeing him in a regular season game no matter how bad things look. If Trubisky, or any quarterback for that matter, is selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, Petty will most likely lose his roster spot.

As New York Daily News says, keeping so many projects at quarterback would make no sense. Petty and Hackenberg already fall into that category. If the Jets add any more quarterbacks it should be someone with playing experience; there is a good chance McCown does not make it through the regular season healthy if he wins the starting job.

This season is probably a make or break year for Petty, and possibly even Hackenberg. If the Jets struggle and land another top pick, they could use that to land a quarterback. Next year’s class is more highly regarded than this year’s, with USC’s Sam Darnold topping the list if he declares early.
