New York Giants Rumors: Defensive lineman Owa Odighizuwa is walking away from the NFL.

Recent New York Giants rumors have revolved around free agency. The Giants have been working hard to improve their roster in free agency heading into the NFL Draft. The needs were clear after weeks of signing people; offensive line and linebacker were at the top of that list. Now, you can add the defensive line as well.

The Giants have as talented a defensive line as anyone in the NFL. Olivier Vernon, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Damon Harrison are all top notch; if they can bring back Johnathan Hankins, they will return every player from last season’s strong unit. But, depth was a problem and is now a bigger problem.

It looks like Owa Odighizuwa is walking away from the NFL. Odighizuwa posted on his Twitter account that he has decided to take some time away from the game as it is in his best interest.

More from Giants Rumors

Odighizuwa was a third-round pick of the Giants in 2015. He was a favorite of scouts and draft analysts and many thought the Giants were getting yet another dominant pass rusher. Those analysts were a little off in their evaluations.

Odighizuwa was never a real part of the Giants defensive line rotations. He played only 126 snaps as a rookie and 170 as a sophomore. He didn’t perform well in either season, finishing with a grade of 37.8 as a rookie and 45.1 in his second year according to Pro Football Focus.

2017 would have been a make or break season for Odighizuwa and he probably would have had a shot at a bigger role. The Giants have very little depth on their offensive line; the starters are relied heavily upon. Odighizuwa could have helped ease some of that pressure, but will not be with the team.

Whatever problem Odighizuwa is dealing with, hopefully, he gets the help that he needs. On the field, the Giants now have an even bigger hole to fill along their defensive line depth chart.
