The Brooklyn Nets and guard Archie Goodwin are finalizing a two-year contract.

The Brooklyn Nets continue to add intriguing young talent to their roster. According to Shams Charania of The Vertical, the Nets and guard Archie Goodwin are finalizing a two-year deal to keep him with the team.

Goodwin had been playing on 10-day contracts with the Nets. His second and final 10-day contract was set to expire tonight, so the two sides are finalizing a deal to keep Goodwin in Brooklyn.

Charania reports that the deal will run through the remainder of this season and next season. There are guarantee dates in the contract for next season according to Charania.

More from Brooklyn Nets

The 22-year old Goodwin has appeared in seven games for the Nets this season. He is averaging 6.6 points, 1.9 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 12.4 minutes per game. The Nets are the second team that Goodwin has played for this season, as he appeared in three games with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Goodwin was selected with the 29th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns. He looked good last season with the Suns, but was unable to find a spot on a team this season. With the Nets, he will have a chance to carve out a role.

There aren’t many teams in the NBA with as many openings as the Nets. Brooklyn has minutes available essentially at every position; only Brook Lopez, Jeremy Lin, Caris LeVert and probably Trevor Booker and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson are guaranteed minutes next year. This is as good a chance as Goodwin has had to find consistent minutes in the NBA.

It also helps that Goodwin is a player that head coach Kenny Atkinson likes. Atkinson spoke to the New York Post recently and said he likes that Goodwin used to play football and hopes that Sean Marks can find more players like that going forward.

"“[He] (Goodwin) played football in high school. I like that,” Atkinson told the New York Post. “Maybe that’s old school. I keep telling [general manager] Sean [Marks], we need more football players.”"

Without their own draft pick, the Nets need to get creative in adding young talent to the roster to help build a foundation. Taking fliers on first round picks such as Goodwin that fell out of favor elsewhere is a good strategy.

The Nets probably won’t find franchise cornerstones with this strategy but they can replenish the roster. If Goodwin even develops into a serviceable backup capable of providing some spot starts the Nets have done well in this situation.
