The New York Knicks appear set on running the triangle offense predominately next season. Could this lead to another roster shakeup?

After a disappointing season for the New York Knicks, change could be on the way this offseason. Despite having playoff expectations, the Knicks are going to be a lottery team once again this offseason.

Even though there is certainly talent on the roster, that talent might not be blending the way the organization would have liked. With a trio of Derrick Rose, Carmelo Anthony, and Kristaps Porzingis, the Knicks should be better.

One of the main issues for the Knicks has been their offense. Coming into the season, new head coach Jeff Hornacek wanted to speed things up a bit for the Knicks on the offensive end. This hasn’t worked out well for New York, and now it appears that they are going to be almost totally committed to running the triangle. With the triangle being the offense next season, the question is, do the Knicks have the players to run it properly?

"When asked if the Knicks’ core could be a playoff team next season Hornacek said to Marc Berman of the New York Post, “There’d have to be a – obviously if we go into it this year – no. If we turn around and have a different way we start, go right at however we’re going to run it next year, if it’s full triangle, it’s possible.“You never know how these things will fit. Maybe a second year is helpful for us. I thought we got off to a decent start this year, then we had little injuries and lost close games and it piled on in confidence, got a little out of control. I don’t know. It’s something we’re going to really look at.’’"

With the Knicks committing to the triangle, this could result in another offseason of change.

"“If we can think of a fresh start of training camp, going to it right off the bat, if that helps us and Phil and Steve [Mills, the GM] think the same guys on the team can have a different outlook on it, they stay the same. If not, they’ll look at other guys.”"

As of now, Derrick Rose will be a free agent this offseason. Rose has expressed some confusion about the triangle offense, and the Knicks also tried to trade him at the trade deadline. In addition to Rose, the Knicks have also tried to trade Carmelo Anthony. In all likelihood, the Knicks would have parted ways with Anthony if they could have this season.

With two of the three best players on the Knicks possibly gone next season, that leaves Porzingis as the last player remaining. Porzingis’ unique offensive abilities should mean that he can play in any offense, but surrounding him with the right pieces is key.
