New York Jets Rumors: Strong interest is reportedly being show in free agent quarterback Brian Hoyer.

Recent New York Jets rumors have revolved around the quarterback position. It is no secret that the Jets need to bring in a new signal caller; they only have Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg on the roster. Their veterans from last season, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Geno Smith are both free agents.

With the chance of retaining Fitzpatrick or Smith slim, the Jets are likely to bring in a veteran. But, it is slim pickings on free agency. The Jets are very unlikely to find their franchise quarterback this season, so another bridge option is likely the route.

There was reportedly interest in Mike Glennon, arguably the best available. But, the Jets bowed out of that race quickly according to CSN Chicago. As a result, the Jets have turned their attention elsewhere.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Jets are showing strong interest in free ageny Brian Hoyer. Rapoport also reports that the San Francisco 49ers are looking into Hoyer, as he has connections to both teams.

Hoyer worked with new 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan when he was with the Cleveland Browns in 2014. The Jets showed interest in Hoyer last season before agreeing to bring back Fitzpatrick. He would bring a steady veteran presence to both teams and would be in a position to be the starter with both teams.

Quarterback is a necessity to win games, but does bringing in a player such as Hoyer make sense for the Jets? What truly is the point of bringing in a useful veteran such as Hoyer, who can help you win maybe five, six games in a season? Why not roll with Petty or Hackenberg and see what they have? You will either find out you have a starting NFL-caliber

Selling free agents to join the Jets in their current state is not an easy thing to do. If they are able to convince a player such as Hoyer to come, they will probably have to jump at the chance. With the purging of the roster going on, the Jets aren’t an ideal landing spot for most free agents, especially veteran ones with aspirations of winning.
