The New Jersey Devils completed a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday, sending forward Sergey Kalinin to Toronto in exchange for Viktor Loov.

The New Jersey Devils are a team to keep an eye on heading into the NHL Trade Deadline. They are on the outside looking in of the postseason, but a run could sneak them into the playoffs. The next week will be huge for the Devils to determine what they will decide to do; either be buyers at the deadline or sellers.

Bigger moves could be on the horizon for the Devils, but they made a smaller one Saturday. The Devils announced that they completed a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Devils will send forward Sergey Kalinin to Toronto in exchange for defenseman Viktor Loov.

The 25-year old Kalinin was in his second season with the Devils after playing 78 games last season. He tallied 15 points on the season, scoring eight goals with seven assists. This season, he had appeared in 43 games, registering only two goals and two assists with a -14 plus/minus. He averaged 12:48 minutes per game on the ice when he played.

Kalinin will report to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, the Maple Leafs minor league affiliate. The AHL will be where Loov reports to as well for the Devils.

Loov will head to the Albany Devils. The 24-year old defenseman has appeared in four NHL games this season, registering two assists. With the Marlies, Loov tallied six points, scoring two goals and handing out four assists. He also had a 1 plus/minus rating and 43 penalty minutes.

While this move will be considered minor, it could be a sign of things to come for the Devils. They have some players on expiring deals that could be traded away prior to the deadline to try and add more assets for the future.
