Jets Rumors: New York Not Expected to Pursue Jay Cutler
By Nick Ziegler
Recent New York Jets rumors have been about what they will do at quarterback for the 2017 season. Is Jay Cutler a possibility?
With the offseason underway, Jets rumors have been swirling about what they will do at quarterback in 2017.
Due to ineffective play from their quarterbacks in 2016, the Jets had one of the worst records in the NFL. After a strong 2015 season, Ryan Fitzpatrick regressed badly and had an awful season. After the organization realized their season was over, Bryce Petty got his chance.
As a developmental player, Petty is still extremely raw. There were some good throws made by Petty, however, there were a lot of mistakes. In addition to Petty being a developmental player, the Jets also have second round pick Christian Hackenberg on the roster.
Hackenberg never saw the field in a regular season game, and it’s impossible to know what to expect from him. Despite not playing, many don’t believe that Hackenberg will be the answer at the quarterback position.

With a likely need for a quarterback in 2017, one name that has been linked to the Jets is Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. According to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com, he doesn’t expect Cutler to land with the Jets if he is cut or traded.
"Cutler is expected to be cut or traded by the Bears, but don’t expect him to land with the Jets. From what I hear, they won’t be suitors for Cutler. I think Tyrod Taylor (if he’s cut by the Bills) and free agent Mike Glennon are higher in the Jets’ pecking order than Cutler."
Last season, Cutler did not play well for the Bears when he was healthy. He only appeared in five games, however, he threw more interceptions than touchdowns in those games. Acquiring Cutler certainly wouldn’t help the Jets long-term, but he would still likely be better than Petty or Hackenberg in 2017. Due to the team not being expected to succeed in 2017, taking playing time away from one of their quarterbacks that they are trying to develop makes little sense.
