The New York Jets need help at cornerback, and this offseason they should target cornerback A.J. Bouye from the Houston Texans.

It was a really poor season for the New York Jets, as they struggled in many areas.. One of the glaring weaknesses was their secondary.

Since taking over as the general manager of the Jets, general manager Mike Maccagnan has invested heavily in the Jets’ secondary. In his first season as the general manager, Maccagnan signed cornerbacks Buster Skrine, Antonio Cromartie, and Darrelle Revis to help strengthen a secondary that was awful from the John Idzik era.

Unfortunately for the Jets and Maccagnan, these moves haven’t quite worked out. Cromartie was on the team for just one season before being released. In his second season back, Revis had a sharp decline in his production. Due to his struggles, Revis might not be back in 2017.

Even if Revis does return next season, the Jets will have to be targeting a cornerback or two in the offseason. One of the best that is available is A.J. Bouye of the Houston Texans. This season, Bouye was rated as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL by Pro Football Focus, and he would be an excellent addition to the Jets.

Although the Jets would surely love to have Bouye, he will be one of the most sought after free agents this offseason. Bouye likely helped him financially this offseason after a great game against the Oakland Raiders.

In the Texans’ win, Bouye was targeted in coverage seven times and caught more passes from Connor Cook than he allowed to be completed. The Patriots were able to have some more success when throwing at Bouye, but he still had a fantastic season.

As a breakout star this season, signing Bouye does come with some risks. There isn’t a lot of success on his resume besides 2016. However, he is emerging as a top cornerback in the NFL. Signing Bouye would be a risk worth taking.
