New York Knicks Rumors: Point guard Derrick Rose will reportedly seek a max contract as a free agent this offseason.

New York Knicks rumors have picked up in recent days surrounding Derrick Rose. After skipping Monday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Rose and the Knicks have dominated headlines in the days after.

Rose left the team saying he had family issues to handle that included his mother. He was able to get back to New York in time for practice Tuesday, and he started for the Knicks against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Knicks fined Rose for his actions, but for a player making over $21 million this season how much does it really impact him?

It is fair to think not much. But, it will effect him even less if he comes close to hitting his goal in free agency this season.

Rose is set to become an unrestricted free agent once this season concludes. At 28-year old, this could be the last time for Rose to strike it rich with an NBA contract, and that is what he plans to do.

More from New York Knicks

According to ESPN New York’s Ian Begley, Rose will be seeking a max contract this offseason. For Rose, that means a five-year, $150 million deal. Rose can seek whatever he wants; it does not mean he will succeed in landing that contract.

Rose has an injury history rivaled by few players currently in the NBA. That alone is a roadblock to a long-term max deal. Add in his recent actions and he has yet another strike against him. Among the bizarre situation was a report that Rose’s commitment to playing basketball was coming into question. Being away from his son was beginning to weigh on him other reports said, so how much can a team truly commit to Rose not knowing how committed he is to them?

While Rose and the Knicks seem to be on the same page now, it will be a situation to keep an eye on as the season goes on. The Knicks are a better team with Rose on the court, albeit how much of a positive impact he has can be argued. What can’t be argued is their win-loss record with and without him; the Knicks have yet to win a game Rose hasn’t suited up in this season.

If Rose is going to land a max contract, it will probably come from another organization. The Knicks won’t be the most flush with cap space this summer, so Rose would take up basically all their available money in free agency. It is something that is unlikely according to The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Wojnarowski reports that the chances of signing a lucrative long-term deal with the Knicks is in jeopardy with the recent incident. It should come as no surprise, as the whole ordeal still has some unanswered questions.

This season Rose is averaging 17.5 points, 4.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game. He has remained relatively healthy, only missing four games because of back spasms earlier in the season. He has looked rather explosive and healthy while on the court, but there is more that goes into handing a player a big-money deal than just on-court performance.
