The New York Jets have been denied a chance to interview Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo for their vacant offensive coordinator spot.

The New York Jets began their overhaul for the 2017 season earlier this week. The first task of business was cleaning house on the coaching staff. Todd Bowles will be retained, as well as his defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers, but there will be wholesale changes made throughout the staff.

Leading the list was Chan Gailey. Gailey announced his retirement after being Bowles’ offensive coordinator the past two seasons. His departure was expected. Five position coaches were also let go, as quarterbacks coach Kevin Patullo, running backs coach Marcel Shipp, defensive line coach Pepper Johnson, outside linebackers coach Mark Collins, and defensive backs coach Joe Danna.

It is tough to argue against any of those decisions. Outside of Bilal Powell at running back, all of those other position coaches oversaw units that did not meet expectations. All six coaches were on the staff from the start of Bowles’ tenure as the Jets’ head coach. There could be more moves on the way, as special teams coordinator Brant Boyer is safe for now.

The Jets will now begin the process of filling in those holes on their coaching staff. It is tough to imagine that people will line up for these job openings with so much uncertainty surrounding the organization. One way is to promote people who may be positional coaches elsewhere.

More from New York Jets

That was the strategy the Jets were taking when they showed interest in Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback coach John DeFilippo. The Jets are looking for their fifth offensive coordinator in seven years and DeFilippo was the person they were targeting, according to ESPN’s Adam Caplan.

DeFilippo was well regarded for the work that he did with rookie Carson Wentz this season but struggled in his lone season as an offensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns in 2015. The Browns finished the season as the worst scoring team in the NFL that season and finished 25th in yards gained.

But, the Jets will not have a chance to see if he could bring some of the success he had with the Eagles to their organization. The Eagles have decided to block DeFilippo from interviewing with the Jets for their offensive coordinator position.

Organizations have the right to block assistants from taking interviews with other teams for any position but a head coaching spot. The Eagles have exercised that right, as they want to keep DeFilippo in the fold with their staff.

DeFilippo has prior experience with the Jets, as he was their quarterbacks coach in 2009; Rex Ryan’s first year as head coach. He was also quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders from 2012-2014.

The Jets will have to look elsewhere for an offensive coordinator with DeFilippo no longer in the equation.
