New York Jets right tackle Breno Giacomini is scheduled to have back surgery on Wednesday to repair a herniated disc in his back.

It was a disappointing season for the New York Jets, and one of the biggest disappointments was the performance of their offensive line. After having a pretty solid unit for the past few years, they took a noticeable step back this season.

Injuries were one of the issues for the Jets’ offensive line, as the starters at the end of the season weren’t even close to what we saw in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals. One of the injured offensive linemen was Breno Giacomini.

After starting the season on the PUP list, Giacomini was only able to play five games for the Jets this season. Since signing from the Seattle Seahawks, Giacomini hasn’t quite lived up to his contract, but this season was a total wash because of his injuries. On Wednesday, Giacomini will be undergoing surgery to repair the herniated disc.

“It should help,” he said of the surgery to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com. “I’ll have a full offseason. I’ll get into training camp and try to make the team again. Hopefully, it helps me get back on the field and get back stronger.”

Due to his poor production, injuries, and contract, Giacomini is certainly going to be a cap casualty candidate this offseason. In the final three games of the season, rookie Brandon Shell started at right tackle for the Jets. Shell played decently considering he is a rookie,  and he could be competing for a starting spot next season.

For Giacomini, it would be shocking to see him back with the Jets next season. Hopefully, his recovery goes well, but the Jets are likely going to be going in a different direction next season.
